Welcome! I’m Janera, and I’m here to share the transformation of my fixer-upper home into a sanctuary that truly supports the health, happiness, and wellbeing of my family and I.

Most of us spend about 90% of our time indoors. The spaces we live in have a profound influence on how we feel—physically, mentally, and even spiritually. That’s why it’s so important to design and maintain a home that actively nurtures us.

I created TheHealthySpace to document the practical and actionable strategies that I’ve implemented which are grounded in the WELL for Residential standard—a science-based, globally recognized framework for creating healthier living environments. I hope to inspire you to also make your home a healthy space which can boost your wellbeing and potentially even promote your longevity.

It’s a journey…

Choosing the right healthy home solutions can feel overwhelming. The science behind materials, air filtration, water purification, biophilic design, and circadian lighting—just to name a few—can be complex and time-consuming to navigate. Yet, each of these elements can profoundly influence how well (and how long) we live. So, to navigate the many options, I’m organizing my home improvements decisions around these eight themes:

I’ll take you behind the scenes as I renovate my home and garden. Along the way, I’ll explain how these choices support our ability to work productively, stay active, relax, enjoy good food, take care of one another, and nurture meaningful relationships.

And, I’ll also chronicle the path to making myself healthy again through better food choices, continuous glucose monitoring, sleep monitoring, and much more.

Hi there, I’m Janera…

For over 15 years, I’ve been working at the intersection of real estate and wellness—exploring how the spaces we live and work in can profoundly shape our health, happiness, and longevity.

I’m currently a Senior Director at the International WELL Building Institute (IWBI), in charge of market development in the real estate sector and Latin America. I’m a WELL Accredited Professional, a member of the WELL Faculty, and advise developers, construction firms, and property managers—large and small—who share a passion for creating environments that elevate the human experience.

I’ve seen firsthand which strategies have the biggest impact on people’s health and wellbeing and created TheHealthySpace to document the transformation of my own home, guided by the WELL for Residential Standard. My goal is to share practical, science-backed insights with anyone embarking on their own home improvement journey—whether that’s choosing toxin-free paints, selecting healthier building materials, implementing air filtration and water purification systems, optimizing natural light, or weaving in more biophilic design. We’ll also explore how nutrition, movement, access to nature, silence, and community play a role in creating a truly healthy life.

I live close to the beach with my family, enjoy gardening, running, yoga, and surfing.
